Deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is similar to sports massage and remedial massage, it focusses on deeper levels of tissues such as ligaments tendons and fascia. Deep tissue massage would be quite suitable for treating areas of chronic tension such as neck and back pain.

"A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people's blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage." What a reason to get a deep tissue massage!

Other studies have revealed that similar types of massage, such as sports/remedial and deep tissue massage have been proven to trigger the release of oxytocin and serotonin, in turn reducing hormone and stress levels.

Deep tissue massage is designed to focus on breaking down knots and scar tissue, knots and scar tissue can be a result of surgery, injury or bad bad posture. They inhibit the bodies movement be reducing tissue (muscle, ligaments tendon and fascia extensibility) flexibilty, circulation and potentially causing aches and "trigger points".

Different techniques maybe used, such as Stripping : long, slow deep gliding pressure and frictions to improve alignment of muscle fibres, breaking down adhesions/scar tissue.

Various body parts maybe used, typically I use:-
• forearms
• knuckles
• elbows
• fingertips

How much will a deep tissue massage hurt?

It really depends on how "dysfunctional" and sensitive the areas are. If it hurts it will often because something is not right with the tissues, such as tightened, shortens and compressed, muscles won't like to be manually "lengthened" and manipulated but it's good for them, over tight muscles can cause stress on the posture, making you work harder and the body will often compensate by causing dysfunctional elsewhere, to "counter balance" the original affected area - thus affecting another area and tis can keep on going. Weakend and lengthened areas would often benefit from appropriate strengthening to tighten the area, although deep tissue massage can help alleviate the symptoms.

Pain may not always be a good sign, and can cause the body to tighten up (subconscious reaction) to reduce further pain. A good therapist would be able to assess and advise and apply appropriate techniques to relax you. I always work on a "scale of 1-10" (in terms of tenderness and pain) and suggest that we will work up to a 7, and 8 and above is too much and will adjust pressure if necessary.

"A majority of readers who used deep-tissue massage or prescription drugs said their chosen therapies helped a lot. Those who tried chiropractic or deep-breathing exercises said they helped as much as or more than over-the-counter medications."
Of 41% who used deep tissue massage, 54% said that it "helped a lot"

• Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
• Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
